Carolina Lupine is best when grown in rich soil, with full sun, but it can tolerate poor soil, partial shade and drought. The plant grows from 3-5 feet, but 5 feet is very rare. It is hardy from Zone 4 to Zone 9. Carolina Lupine can be seeded in the fall or spring as soon as the last frost has passed. Seeds should be scored before planting, and if planting in the spring, the seeds should be soaked overnight. These plants take at least one year and as long as three years to mature.

Lupine, Carolina

Carolina Lupine is not a lupine. Its scientific name is thermopsis villosa and it is a member of the legume or bean family. It is a hardy perennial that is indigenous to the Southeastern United States where it is also known by the names Aaron’s Rod, Blue Ridge Buckbean, Carolina Bushpea and False Lupine. The plant produces tall spires of brilliant yellow flowers. The fragrance from these flowers attracts butterflies, bees and other pollinators.
